Abstract

Today, the tourism sector has a critical importance for the countries’ economies and it is important for the businesses operating in the sector to continue their existence for the development of the sector. In an increasingly competitive environment with globalization, it is an important problem for businesses to continue their existence. One of the most important factors for businesses to continue their assets is their financial performance. Businesses need to attract more customers in order to improve their financial performance and maintain their existence. The increase in the number of customers will lead to more sales and therefore an increase in profitability. This situation will positively affect the financial performance of the enterprises. Advertising is one of the most important tools that businesses use to attract more customers. Therefore, it is necessary to determine whether advertising activities have an effect on financial performance. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between the expenditures for advertising activities and the performance of the firm. In the study, quarterly data of the tourism enterprises indexed in BIST for the period 2016-2021 were used as a data set. The dependent variables were return on equity (ROE) and return on assets (ROA), while the independent variable was advertising expenditures and the control variable was net profit. According to the results of Dumitrescu and Hurlin (2012) Panel Causality approach, it was found that there was a bidirectional causality relationship between expenditures for advertising activities and firm performance.. Therefore, it can be said that the advertising expenditures of the companies will increase their financial performance.
