Abstract

Children in the preschool age group are at the highest risk group of accidents due to their curiosity to explore their environment, being constantly on the move, being inexperienced against dangers and risks, and their efforts to imitate adults. It is known that home accidents are mostly seen in the 3-6 age group. Parental observation and supervision, awareness levels are very important in preventing home accidents. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of home accidents in preschool children, the awareness of home accidents of parents with preschool children and their educational needs regarding home accidents. The research has a cross-sectional descriptive feature. Families with children in the pre-school period constituted the research population. The research sample was selected from children aged 3-6 years registered at the Family Health Center. A total of 396 families were included in the study. While the rate of having an accident in the last year was 16.7%, it was determined as 44.6% of those who had an accident at least once in their entire life. Accidents that children frequently experience; falling (68.8%), penetrating-cutting (13.6%) and burning (8.3%) were reported. It has been observed that families are insufficient in determining the factors that may be at risk of accident. The data obtained as a result of the research reveal that the majority of the families have not received any training on home accidents and they need an education.
