Abstract

Russia went through an extremely difficult transformation process after the Cold War. During this period, Russia encountered various political, social and economic crises. The bad course in the Russian economy led to many domestic and foreign policy uncertainties. All these events created a bad image for Russia in the global system. Following pragmatic policies, the Putin administration has developed geographical strategies regarding its near region. Putin has taken some measures to increase the central government's power and develop new security strategies at the borderlands. Thus, while Russia has been becoming stronger at home, it would enable Moscow to pursue an effective foreign policy. In this study, the Russia-Ukraine war will be examined in light of the geographical security elements that are the priorities in the foreign policy understanding of the Putin administration and Dmitri Trenin’s Double Border strategy.
