Abstract

Having no physical campus and offering education via electronic networks on the web by means of instruments like e-mails and video-conference, Virtual University is a new institution in higher education field. Studying at a virtual university is different from studying at a traditional university as there are no walls, classrooms, and face to face interactions. All you need is a computer with internet connection. It is accepted that one of the main purposes of virtual university initiations is not to substitute traditional universities; instead they target to support classical education using information communication technologies and become alternative institutions generating different means and methods of learning. However, although there seems to have a participative design and teacher-student interaction, student participation in discussions and interactions with others as well, there have been serious critiques on virtual universities. There have been some discussions on virtual universities recently. For these reasons, the main purpose of this study is to put forward what virtual universities are, how they have emerged out, how they work, and what the realities of virtual universities are in different countries and in Turkey. Moreover, this study also aims to discuss how academic process works at these institutions. Finally, it is intended to give some criticism about virtual universities in the literature.
