Abstract

al-Naqa’id poetry type has a prominent place in the Arab heritage. Satire, which is one of the oldest products of Arab poetry, evolved over time and emerged as a literary genre named as al-Naqa’id. al-Naqa’id poetry type, which emerged with the satire of two people with the same measure and meter, had a special place in the old Arab society and was used against the enemy in wars. This genre was a trend known for humor, joke and originality from the Jahiliyya period. Because it was transmitted among the tribes over poets. As a matter of fact, a limited number of al-Naqa’id poetry has been carried since the Jahiliyya period. Continuing its existence in the Islamic period, it is seen that it appeared mostly in religious direction. When it comes to the Umayyad period, it emerged because of literary, moral and political needs. These are completely new in terms of literature and politics. In terms of social and tribal aspects, it has had the opportunity to develop as a result of the tribal conflicts that took place in the Jahiliyya period. This species, which lived its brightest period during the Umayyad period, is known for its most famous examples especially in the struggle with Jarir and al-Farazdaq and al-Akhtal. In this study, first of all, the definition of the al-Naqa’id is followed by the birth of Islam in the place of this species in the Arab society during the Cahilian period. It was tried to touch on the examples seen in the Prophet’s period, the status of the type of al-Naqa’id in the Four Caliphs, and finally the characteristics of the al-Naqa’id in the Umayyad period.
