Abstract

The difference of this study from other studies is to investigate the economic growth for Germany, which increased its use of renewable energy by 84811% in 2018 compared to 1990, and reduced energy losses by 415% during the distribution, transmission and transportation of energy in the same period. In doing so, it analyzes economic growth, renewable energy use and energy losses for Germany with annual data for the period 1990-2019. First of all, standard ADF and Fourier ADF stationarity tests were used to determine to what degree the series were stationary. Then, Banerjee et al. The cointegration relationship was tested with the Fourier ADL test, which was brought to the literature by the author, and the cointegration relationship was found. Later, the long and short-run relationship between variables was tested with estimators that include structural changes such as the Developed Least Squares Method (FMOLS) and Canonical Cointegrated Regression (CCR) into the model as dummy variables. The findings show that while both the short and long term economic growth increases the consumption of renewable energy for Germany, the increase in energy losses decreases. In addition, the speed of returning to short-term equilibrium of economic growth in the form of FMOLS (-0.795) and CCR (-0.868) were found to be in line with the theoretical expectation, negative and statistically significant. Therefore, while renewable energy sources provide very important opportunities for Germany, reducing energy losses will also increase economic growth.
