Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between the 6th grade students’ representation and problem solving skills in decimal numbers. The study group consists of a total of 360 students, 179 of which are girls and 181 are boys, studying in six different state schools in a province in the Eastern Black Sea region. Multiple Representation Test in Decimal Numbers and Problem Solving Test in Decimal Numbers were used as data collection tools. The results of the study reveal that students’ representation skill in decimal numbers is a significant predictor of their problem solving skill. Representation skills that most strongly predicted problem-solving skill were determined to be transferring from pictorial representation to symbolic representation, transferring from symbolic representation to pictorial representation, and transferring from symbolic representation to symbolic representation, in order of priorities. As a result, it was determined that these three variables together could explain the problem solving skill at a certain level.

Özet

Bu çalışmada, ortaokul 6.sınıf öğrencilerinin ondalık gösterimlerle temsil ve problem çözme becerileri arasındaki ilişkinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışma grubunu Doğu Karadeniz bölgesindeki bir ildeki altı farklı devlet okulunda öğrenim gören 179’u (%49.7) kız, 181’i (%50.3) erkek olmak üzere toplam 360 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Veri toplama aracı olarak ondalık gösterimlerle çoklu temsil testi (ÇTT) ve ondalık gösterimlerle problem çözme testi (PÇT) kullanılmıştır. Çalışma sonuçları öğrencilerin ondalık gösterimlerde temsil becerisinin problem çözme becerisinin anlamlı bir yordayıcısı olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Problem çözme becerisini en güçlü yordayan temsil becerileri, önem sırasına göre, resimsel temsilden sembolik temsile transfer edebilme, sembolik temsilden resimsel temsile transfer edebilme ve sembolik temsilden sembolik temsile transfer edebilme olarak belirlenmiştir. Sonuçta, bu üç değişkenin birlikte problem çözme becerisini belirli bir düzeyde açıklayabildiği tespit edilmiştir.
