Abstract

The rapid transformation in communication technologies has increased children’s early exposure to media content and necessitated a reassessment of child representation in the national press in the context of children’s rights in Türkiye. This study aims to examine child-centered news published between 2020 and 2024 in three high-circulation national newspapers in Türkiye (Sözcü, Hürriyet, and Sabah) in terms of theme, target audience, and forms of representation, within the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child’s pillars of survival, development, protection, and participation rights. In this descriptive qualitative study, printed and online archives were searched; among 2,295 news stories, 127 news items meeting the criteria were included in the content analysis (Sözcü=47, Hürriyet=49, Sabah=31). Using a document analysis evaluation list developed by the researchers, the news articles were coded according to the dimensions of function, topic, child representation, focus, and target audience. Reliability was ensured through mutual checks by the two researchers. Findings revealed that the news predominantly focused on themes of child development (45.67%) and child health (24.41%). The vast majority of target audiences consisted of parents (53.54%) and the general public (43.31%); children were most frequently represented as “child in the development process” (41.73%) and “child at risk” (29.13%). Forms of representation reflecting the child’s active participation were notably limited (0.79% each). Warning, anxiety, and fear emerged as dominant patterns in terms of language and emotional framing in the newspaper articles. The results show that children’s journalism in the national press is overwhelmingly constructed within a risk- and threat-focused framework. To guarantee the protection and participation rights of children, it is necessary to adopt ethics based on children’s rights and promote participatory and supportive frameworks that prevent identity and privacy violations.
