Abstract

In this article we will discuss a pilgrimage flask ampulla that was found during the excavations in Yumuktepe mound in Mersin. The flask was found in the 11th century layer and represents Saint Menas with two camels. Saint Menas’s monastery church close to Alexandria was important between the 5th-7th centuries. It is believed that the pilgrimage flasks held oil from an oillamp illuminating the church or water coming from a spring close by that was thought to have healing properites. Saint Menas ampullae were also taken to remote places
