Abstract

People with physical symptoms as well as psychiatric illnesses are not satisfied with medical care and services, they force health workers and cause employees to feel stressed and feel negative feelings (Gerrard ve Riddell, 1988: 531). The communication skills of medical secretaries who first meet patients that apply for services to the hospital and communicate directly with the patient in accordance with their duties are highly influential in coping with such patients. The purpose of this descriptive study is to determine the frequency of confidential medical secretaries meeting with difficult patients, the difficulties in communication with these patients, and the methods by which medical secretaries deal with such patients. As data collection, under the cover of Kistler's (2011) Difficult Patient Interaction Questionnaire and Hahn et al. (1996) Difficult Physician-Patient Questionnaire which was adapted to Turkish by Çelik (2012) was used as data collection tool. The study was carried out on 144 medical secretaries who worked in the University of the Mediterranean Hospital and volunteered to work. The obtained data were analyzed with the SPSS 22.0 program. In the evaluation of the data, descriptive statistics are presented with frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation. In order to determine the factor structure of the question groups in the study, explanatory factor analysis was applied. Alpha analysis was used with the intent of testing the internal consistency of the dimensions and the t test was used to analyze the difference between the two groups of dimensions obtained. Pearson chi-square test was used in the analysis of the variance analysis (ANOVA) test and the analysis of the relationships between categorical variables in the three phase group comparisons of the participants. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that the secretaries described 3 out of every 10 patients as difficult patients, while female secretaries defined female patients as being difficult patients and male secretaries as male patients were diagnosed as having difficulty. In addition, married secretaries described patients who were married at higher margins as difficult patients, while those in single secretaries described patients with higher marginalized patients as difficult patients. The findings have been reached. As a result of the work, it is suggested that health communication training should be included in the in-service training program and this training should be given practically in order to facilitate the communication of the medical secretaries with the patients.
