Abstract

Women, particularly those at childbearing age, are vulnerable to affective disorders such as anxiety and depression more frequently than are men, and during pregnancy, the frequency is even higher. Pregnancy and childbirth process is a period during which women not only experience biological, physiological and psychological changes but also are at a high risk of facing factors leading to a lot of anxiety and stress.Concerns such as the health status of the baby and the possibility that risks arising during delivery can cause harm to the baby make the mother-to-be stressed and anxious. While increased anxiety can lead to depressive symptoms in pregnant women, the presence of depression can increase their anxiety as well.If depression, the most common affective disorder seen during pregnancy, continues during the postpartum period, it not only causes harm to the mother but also brings about the risk of affecting the child later in life negatively. Therefore, the first step in preventing pregnancy depression is to identify women at risk of depression. The next step is to provide psychotherapy and psycho-education to those suffering mild and moderate depression due to the possible side effects of medication. Administration of medication is the option to be considered in case the depression is severe. In order for the prospective mother to have healthy pregnancy and postpartum process and for the baby and other members of the family to lead a healthy life, midwives, nurses, physicians and other healthcare workers bear important responsibilities.
