Abstract

Introduction and Aim: A simple examination technique called ‘‘Vulvar Self-Examination’’ is recommended since there is no specific screening method for vulvar diseases. Teaching this examination to women is duty of health personnel. In this study, it is aimed to determine knowledge, attitudes and behaviors of health personnel about this examination. Methods: This study is descriptive. The research was carried out between January- June 2019 with 72 healthcare professionals working in women's health field in two hospitals, Aydin. The data was collected by the researchers with a questionnaire prepared according to literature. Descriptive statistics were used for the evaluation. Results: All participants stated that vulvar diseases could be detected by observation. It was stated that colour change (38.8%) could be detected by observation, and protection could be provided by paying attention to hygiene (48.6%) most commonly. Most of the respondents (79.2%) heard of vulvar self-examination. The proportion of participants who stated that vulvar examination should be done once a month and from the age 20 is 29.2% and 38.9% respectively. It was determined that most health personnel (55.6%) did not recommend the examination to women they served. The majority (62.3%) of the female health personnel stated that they performed vulvar self-examination. Conclusion: Knowledge of health personnel about vulvar examination, their behavior of performing it, and their recommendation of this examination to women are not at the desired level. So as to protect women’s health and enable them to diagnose disease symptoms early, the awareness and knowledge of health professionals about the vulvar examination should be increased before and after graduation.
