Abstract

In present study foreign graduate students’ opinions towards perfectionism is investigated. It is conducted qualitatively. Foreign students studying in a Pre-school Teaching Department at a State university which is located in the West of Turkey are examined. “Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale” which involves questions regarding perfectionism that society imposes, self-directed perfectionism and relatively perfectionism and an Interview Form including seven open-ended questions are used as data collection tools. It is resulted that foreign students try to do their best by having high standards of goals in everything they do and expect the perfect results from themselves in terms of their thoughts towards perfectionism in sub-dimension of self-perfectionism. In the sub-dimension of relatively perfectionism, it is seen that foreign students expect too much from the people around them and they have reactions such as sadness, feeling bad and anger when their expectations from those are not fulfilled. It is also found that students fulfill the expectations of their parents and surrounding in terms of sub-dimension of perfectionism imposed by society and when they can’t complete a task perfectly as they are expected, it is found that this situation does not have any negative effects on them. It is resulted that foreign students try to do their best by having high standards of goals in everything they do and expect the perfect results of themselves when foreign graduate students’ thoughts towards perfectionism is examined in the subdimension of self-perfectionism. It is seen that foreign students have reactions such as sadness, feeling bad and anger when they expect great things from others but they do not see the result they want, in the subdimension of others-perfectionism as well. It is also found that there is not a negative effect when students reached the goal what the others want from them and when they do not match the expectations within the subdimension of perfectionism imposed by society.
