Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the full studio model in which active learning techniques are used on the conceptual understandings of preservice science teachers about the concept of "Buoyant Force". The sample of the study consisted of 53 preservice science teachers who were enrolled in Science Teaching Program of Necatibey Education Faculty at Balıkesir University in the academic year of 2015-2016. In this study, single group pretest-posttest weak experimental design was used and two open-ended questions were asked to preservice science teachers about the buoyant force. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 preservice science teachers so that the answers could be examined in depth. In the light of the findings, many of the preservice science teachers were aware that liquids exerts buoyant force but they did not know what affected the magnitude of the buoyant force and they often confused the buoyant force with liquid pressure. While the proportion of the scientifically acceptable responses given after teaching was increased 92.45% and 77.26% for each question , the proportion of scientifically unacceptable and other responses 7.55% and 22.64% was decreased. In the interviews, most of the misconceptions encountered before the teaching show that they have been replaced with scientific notions after the teaching
