Abstract

This study aims to search the hopelessness levels of the teacher candidates’ taking KPSS but not being able to be appointed and the ones that are obliged to study for the exam again, and the negative effects of this situation in their lives. This study is done with the 265 teacher candidates, who are preparing for the KPSS in a private KPSS preparation course in Afyonkarahisar in 2014–2015, face to face interview with a pre prepared questionnaire. In the study to be able to reveal the negative effects of the exam to the teacher candidates’ lives a 47-question quinapril likert scale questionnaire composed with the help of literature, and “Beck Hopelessness Scale” revealing negative attitudes of the candidates towards future is used. In the analysis of the data Structural Equality Model (YEM), t test and one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) are used. According to YEM results, as the teacher candidates’ negative thoughts towards KPSS exam increases, the future anxiety and the negative effect of the exam on candidates’ life increases. Likewise, as the social pressure and future anxiety of the teacher candidates’ increase, it is participated that the negative effect of the exam on life increases as well. Moreover, as the family support on the candidates increase the perceived social pressure decreases. It is stated that the level of hope of the candidate teachers doesn’t show differences according to their gender and the number of their having an exam but it shows differences to their age, marital status and their financial situation
