Abstract

Traumatic brain injuries are an important public health problem that can be seen in any age group in the community. The most common causes are traffic accidents and falling from heights. As a result of such injuries, intracranial hemorrhage with high mortality and morbidity may occur. Trauma causes sudden movement of the brain within the skull. The injury can be primary or secondary. Primary injury happens with the sudden effect of external trauma. Studies have shown that cell death can begin even hours after the primary brain injury. There may also be contusion, bleeding, and axonal damage. Secondary injury can develop minutes or even months after the primary injury. In order to understand the biomechanical, molecular and cellular effects of such injuries, several injury models have been used in experimental studies. The aim of the present study is to review these animal models.
