Abstract

Objective: Bloodstream infections caused byCandida species are one of the most important causethat increase morbidity and mortality in hospitalizedpatients. Among the bloodstream infections caused byfungi, Candida species are the most frequently isolatedones. In addition to C. albicans (CA) from Candidaspecies the prevalence of non-albicans Candida (NAC)species is gradually increasing. In our study, it was aimedto determine risk factors in candidemias caused by CAand NAC species isolated from the blood culture of thepediatric and adult patients for 3 years period and tocompare patients having candidemias caused by the twospecies.Method: Samples taken from the candidemiasuspected patients for blood culture were inoculatedinto BACTEC Aerobik/F bottles and placed into theautomated system BACTEC 9240 (Becton Dickinson,Maryland, USA). The blood culture that signalized apositive growth alarm were subcultured on the 5%sheep blood and chocolate agars. Germ tube test wasperformed on isolated yeast colonies. The identificationof germ tube test negative colonies were done accordingto the level of species with the use of API 20C AUX bioMérieux, France) kit. Germ tube test positiveisolates were identified as albicans Candida albicans. Results: It was observed that, from the total of163 patients having Candida isolated from their bloodculture 100 (61.3%) of them were between 0-17 years ofage range, 63 (38.4%) were > 17 years of age, 86 (52.7%)male and 77 (47.2%) were female. It was determinedthat out of 163 patients, 150 episodes were nosocomialinfections and 13 episodes were community aqcuiredinfections. CA was isolated from 79 (48.5%) of thepatients, whereas NAC were isolated from 84 (51.5%).When we look through the distribution of non-albicansCandida species, it was observed that C. parapsilosiswere 54 (32.9%), C. tropicalis were 10 (6.1%),C. famata were 10 (6.1%),C. glabrata were 5 (3.0%)and others (C. pelliculosa, C. crusei and C. norvogensis)were 5 (3.0%).Conclusion: For candidemia which was diagnosedwith the growth of Candida species in blood culture, total parenteral nutrition (TPN) usage, presence ofcentral venous catheter, underlying diseseases especiallymalignancy and burns and previous antibiotics treatmentwere determined as the risk factors for candidemia.Additionally before candidemia empiric antifungaltreatment (p
