Abstract

Movement is an important part of a child’s physical, mental and emotional development. Children’s physical inactivity has been categorized as a modifiable risk factor for lifestyle-related diseases. Therefore, starting from the period of preschool children should be provided regularly and consciously physical activity. With this attention comes the need to identify the amount and type of physical activity appropriate for optimal development of preschool children. The purpose of this paper is to provide the scientific evidence to support a link between physical activity and development during early childhood in our country. To do so, we summarize pertinent literature informing the nature of the physical activity required to promote healthy physical, cognitive, motor and social development during these early years. We provide recommendations for physical activity based on the best available evidence.
