Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of the motivational climate perceived from peers and parents on the moral decision-making attitudes of students participating in a primary school indoor football tournament. The sample consisted of 207 male primary school students aged 10-11 participating in the indoor football tournament held in Ağrı. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple hierarchical regression analyses. Instruments included the Peer Motivational Climate in Youth Sport Questionnaire, the Parent-Initiated Motivational Climate Questionnaire-2 (mother and father forms), the Attitudes to Moral Decision-Making in Youth Sport Questionnaire-2, and a personal information form. Results indicated that the peer task climate had a positive effect on keeping winning in proportion, whereas the peer ego climate didn’t have a significant role. The learning/enjoyment climate perceived from mother had a significant positive effect on keeping winning in proportion. The perceived worry conducive climate and success-without-effort climate from both mother and father did not play a significant role in predicting keeping winning in proportion. The perceived motivational climate from the mother, father, and peers did not significantly predict acceptance of gamesmanship. Both peer task climate and ego climate played a significant role in predicting acceptance of cheating. The perceived worry conducive climate and success-without-effort climate from the mother and father and the perceived learning/enjoyment climate from father did not play a significant role in determining the acceptance of cheating, while the perceived learning/enjoyment climate from mother negatively predicted the acceptance of cheating. In conclusion, the findings suggest that perceived motivational climates from peers and from mothers play a significant role in predicting moral decision-making attitudes.
