Abstract

Background: Variations of root and duct morphology in teeth;is influential on the planning and prognosis of endodontictreatment. Assuming that all teeth have a normal anatomicalstructure, surgical procedures without evaluating the number ofroots and canals may result in negative results. Imagingmethods before and during treatment can prevent complicationsthat may develop. The aim of this study is to evaluate the rootand canal numbers of mandibular first and second premolarteeth with digital panoramic radiographic images in a wide agerange. Methods: 1030 digital panoramic radiographic images obtainedfrom randomly selected individuals were retrospectivelyexamined by two oral and maxillofacial radiologists to evaluatethe root and canal morphology of mandibular premolar teeth.Root and canal morphologies of teeth were evaluated accordingto Vertucci classification. The chi-square test was used tocompare their gender and age-related distributions. P
