Abstract

Background: The aim of the present study was to determinethe diagnostic value of handheld thoracic ultrasound scanning(HH-US) in patients referred to pulmonary outpatient clinic. Methods: Fifty-four patients (44 male, 8 1.5% and 10 female18.5%) were included. Ultrasonographic scans were per- formed by the same pulmonary specialist. Scans were thenrepeated by a radiology specialist using regular ultrasoundscanner. Anteroposterior chest X-ray (AP X-ray) findings, indi- cations for thoracic ultrasound, HH-US findings, regular ultra- sound findings, invasive procedures performed with guidanceof HH-US, complications, and duration of HH-US scanningwere recorded. Results: Pleural effusion, mass lesion in the lung, peripheralsolitary pulmonary nodule, consolidation, giant bulla, and ax- illary metastasis with a central lung lesion were indications forthoracic ultrasound in 40 cases (74%), 5 cases (9.2%), 5 cases(9.2%), 2 cases (3.7%), 1 case ( 1.8%), and 1 case ( 1.8%), respec- tively. Sensitivity and specificity of HH-US in pleural effusionswere 8 1% and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: Pulmonary specialists experienced in thoracicultrasound can easily utilize HH-US scanners in the diagnosisand treatment of various lung diseases, primarily pleural ef- fusions.
