Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the contributions of socio-demographic variables such as age, class, relationship situation, relationship duration and irrational beliefs of university students related to romantic relationships and their perceptions concerning premarital relationship to determine relationship satisfaction. The research group consists of 299 university students having education in a state university of Hatay. Irrational Romantic Relationship Beliefs Inventory (IRRBI) which was developed by Sarı (2008), was used to measure the beliefs of university students about romantic relationships and in order to evaluate the perceptions of students about premarital relationship, Premarital Relationship Assessment Scale (PRAS) developed by Kalkan and Kaya (2007) was used. Furthermore, the relationship satisfaction of university students was measured by Relationship Satisfaction sub dimension (RS) of Relationship Stability Scale (RSS) developed by Rusbult, Martz and Agnew (1998) and was adapted to Turkish culture by Büyükşahin, Hasta and Hovardaoğlu, (2005). In order to determine the relationship satisfaction precursors Hierarchic Multiple Regression Analysis was used. The results showed that relationship situation and excess expectations, different thinking, gender differences which are sub dimensions of IRRBI and religious values, communication, friend relationships, family relationships sub dimensions of PRAS predicts relationship satisfaction signifi cantly
