Abstract

Alloplastic materials for breast augmentation and reconstruction have been commonly used. Fibrous capsuler contraction is a frequent complication of breast augmentation and the risk of contracture steadily increases with time. Calcifications of the contracted fibrous capsule can cause pressure atrophy of the gland and pectoralis major muscle. This long-term complication is named Krakatau syndrome. In our report, we present a representative case of Krakatau syndrome in a 45 years old woman. She had undergone breast augmentation 22 years previously. On examination a severe capsuler contraction was seen with hard breasts and a visible deformity. After removal of the implants, calcified capsule, atrophy of the mammary glands and pectoralis mıuscle was observed.
