Abstract

The aim of this prospective study was to determine the ventilator-associated pneumoniae (VAP) pathogens isolated from mini- bronchoalveolar lavage (mini-BAL) samples obtained from patients in intensive care unit (ICU); to distinguish them from colonizing bacteria; to determine the micro-organisms distribution and their susceptibilities to several antibiotics in ICU. Totally 41 strains were isolated from 64 mini-BAL samples obtained from 16 patients in ICU between February 2005 and June 2005. Acinetobacter spp and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the most frequently isolated species from mini-BAL samples. Antimicrobials which show the highest susceptibility rates for P. aeruginosa were as follows: the amicasin (83%) , ceftazidime (67%), ciprofloxasin (67%), cefepime (58%), piperacillin-tazobactam (58%); Acinetobacter strains were highly resistant to all avaliable antimicrobials and netilmicin (73%) susceptibility rate was the highest among them. High resistance rates for antibiotics suggested that the treatment of the empirical antibiotics recommended for VAP cases should be updated according to the surveillance data.
