Abstract

Objectives: We evaluated right ventricular (RV) functions using tissue Doppler echocardiography (TDE) and sought correlations with left ventricular (LV) functions and mitral valve area (MVA) in patients with mitral valve stenosis (MS) associated with sinus rhythm or atrial fibrillation (AF). Study design: The study included 55 patients with isolated rheumatic MS (MVA ≤2.5 cm2), of which 30 patients were in sinus rhythm, and 25 patients had AF. The control group consisted of 30 healthy individuals. Conventional echocardiography was performed to measure LV and RV diameters, LV ejection fraction, and MVA in all the subjects. Isovolumetric contraction time (ICT), isovolumetric relaxation time (IRT), ejection time (ET), and systolic velocities (Sm) were measured with TDE. Myocardial performance indices (MPI) of both ventricles were calculated. Results: Compared to the patients with sinus rhythm, patients with AF had significantly higher LV end-systolic diameter, RV diameter, and pulmonary artery pressure, and lower LV ejection fraction and MVA. There were no significant differences between the two patient groups with respect to IRT and ICT values of both ventricles. Ejection times of both ventricles were significantly lower in patients with AF. Patients with MS had significantly higher MPI and lower Sm of both ventricles, being more prominent in the AF group. Mitral valve area was positively correlated with Sm (r=0.42, p=0.001) and inversely correlated with MPI (r= -0.38, p=0.005) values of the RV. Positive correlations were found between Sm (r=0.32, p=0.01) and MPI (r=0.82, p
