Abstract

Recently, bipbospbonates have become widely used agents in the treatment of osteoporosis. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of alendronate, one of the biphosphonate agents which have been accepted as effective in the treatment of osteoporosis. This study was carried out in postmenopausal osteoporotic women who were admitted to our osteoporosis clinic in an outpatient state. Bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral concent (BMC), serum osteocalcin and type 1 procollagen levels of the patients were determined in pretreatment period and one-year later, after they were placed on alendronate treatment, 10 mg per day orally for 1 year. As a result, we concluded that alendronate treatment caused an increase in BMD and BMC, and decreases in serum osteocalcin and type 1 procollagen levels.
