Abstract

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of mature lamellar bone in soft tissue and periarticular areas. Although, HO is reported as a rare complication in hemiplegia, it is a well recognised complication in several groups of illness such as traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, orthopaedic disorders, burns and musculoskeletal trauma. Decreased range of motion is reported as the most common complication of HO. Restriction of joint motion may result in significant functional limitation, and ADL such as difficulty with hygiene, sitting and ambulation. The present article presents a review of the literature and four cases of HO with hemiplegia.
