Abstract

Different approaches are used against lipemia interference in clinical chemistry analyses. These are ultrasantrifugation, organic solvent extraction, dialysis, sample dilution and sample blank correction. In our study, lipid particles were sedimented by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran sulfate (DS) in lipemic samples. We prepared a solution containing 200 g/L of PEG and 10 mg/L DS and investigated the efficiency of this solution against lipemia interference in 26 biochemical tests of which 20 were photometric and 6 were electrochemical. A lipid solution (Ivelip %10, IL) was added to a normal serum pool at five different concentrations to obtain five different pools. These pools were simultaneously analyzed after ultracentrifugation and treatment with PEG-DS. PEG-DS solution removed about 50% (35% - 76%) of triglycerides and ultracentrifugation removed 29% (19% - 41%). There was no difference between original serum pool and PEG-DS procedure for 19 out of 26 tests when ±%10 limits of original values were considered. In conclusion, PEG-DS solution can be used for the prevention of lipemia interference in the measurement of glucose, urea, creatinine, uric acid, total protein, ALT, AST, GGT, ALP, LDH, CK, K, Cl, Ca, Mg, Fe, AMS, IUBC, and cholinesterase.
