Abstract

The aim of the this study is to investigate the effect of antiaggregant medication on the occurrence of microembolic signals in patients who had a cerebral ischemic event in the middle cerebral artery territory. One hundred fifty patients underwent full clinical and laboratory investigations. The patients were randomized to ticlopidine (500 mg/day) or acetylsalicylic acid (150 mg /day). After randomization, we prospectively did bilateral transcranial Doppler monitoring two times from both middle cerebral arteries in all patients. Mean interval time between repeated examination was 140.1 ± 4.3 days. Thirty-three of 150 patients had to be excluded from the study because of missing data. The remaining 117 patients were assessed statistically. MES were detected in 43 patients (36.8%) at initial examination. On repeated examination, MES were found less frequent in (28.2 %) in of patients. In addition, there was no significant reduction of the MES occurrence in patients given ticlopidine or acetylsalicylic acid. In conclusion, ticlopidine has an superior effect on the occurrence of MES to acetylsalicylic acid with these given dosages.
