Abstract

The Evaluation of Needlestick and Sharp Injuries Among Intensive Care Nurses Objective: This study aims to determine the reason(s) of sharp and needle stick injury in intensive care nurses working hospital and the use of safety practice exposure to blood containing material. Method: Research has established the sample of 224 intensive care nurse. Researchers used a questionnaire was developed and prepared in accordance with the relevant literature for data collection. The data, as well as descriptive statistics, two-way analysis of variance, and correlation test were evaluated. Results: 62.1% of them are working Internal Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 37.9 of them are working surgery ICU. 6.2% of nurses that participate our study have 12 shifts per a mounth. The prevalence of injury was found 20.1% of nurses working in internal units and 23.7% nurses working in surgical units. The causes of injuries are common to both internal and surgical intensive care nurses. % 65.8 of them experiencing sharp and needle stick injury between 1-3 times last 12 month in their professional life and % 21.2 of intensive care nurses experiencing a sharp and needle stick injury. The number of injures raise when the number of shift and age of nurses increase.Precautions taken by intensive care nurses are largely use of gloves (91.6%), wearing a mask (47.7%), wearing gowns (29.9%), hand washing (17.6%), use of glasses (13.6%) and isolation (11.9%). Conclusion: Ratio of sharp object injuries amoung intense care nurses are affected by age of nurse, frequency of shifts and shift hours. The training program regulation, use of guidelines and establishment of effective surveillance programs should be planned for prevention of these injuries.

Bulgular: Yoğun bakım hemşirelerinin %62.1’i Dahili, %37.1’i Cerrahi Yoğun Bakım Ünitesi’nde çalışmakta ve %6.2’si ayda 12 nöbet tutmaktadır. Yaralanma sıklığı Dahili yoğun bakım hemşirelerinde %20.1, Cerrahi yoğun bakım hemşirelerinde %23.7 olarak saptanmıştır. Yaralanma nedenleri her iki birimde benzerdir.
