Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the efficiency of surgical treatment methods in congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO). Material and Method: In this study, 122 eyes of 90 patients with epiphora were included. The mean age of patients was 35 months. Obstruction was unilateral in 58 (64%) and bilateral in 32 (36%) patients. Patients were divided into 4 groups: Group1: 0-12 months, group2: 13-24 months, group 3:25-48 months and group 4:49-72 months. Patients were treated with probing, silicone tube intubation (STI) or dacriocystorhinostomy and silicone tube intubation (DCR+STI). Operation was accepted as successful when epihora was resolved within 3 months after treatment. The mean postoperative follow-up time was 6.2 months. Results: The success rate of probing, STI and DCR+STI were 87%, 82% and 100%, respectively. The success rate according to the age groups was 95% in group1, 88% in group2, 81% in group 3, 71% in group4 for probing; 100% in group2, 82% in group3, 76% in group4 for STI; 100% in group4 for DCR+STI. Conclusion: High success rate is achieved with probing in early childhood and besides this it is an effective and safe method in late childhood. In unsuccessful cases, more invasive methods such as STI or DCR should be applied.
