Abstract

Introduction: We aimed to analyze the frequency, clinical characteristics, medical treatment options and final functional status of Guillain-Barrésyndrome (GBS) and its variants in a population from a tertiary hospitalsetting. Methods: All medical records of patients with acute inflammatorypolyneuropathy between the years of 1998–2013 were retrospectivelyscreened. Demographic, clinical and laboratory information, treatmentoptions and the rate of recovery of the patients were gathered. Results: A total of 183 patients met the study criteria. Subtypes weretypical demyelinating form (n=102, 79.1%), acute motor sensoryaxonal variant (n=11, 8.5%), acute motor axonal variant (n=10, 7.8%),Miller-Fisher syndrome (n=5, 3.9%), and pure sensory subtype (n=1,0.8%). Remaining patients had the diagnosis of acute-onset chronicinflammatory demyelinating polynuropathy. The data of treatmentoption were available for 70 patients. Most of the patients receivedintravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) treatment or the combination of IVIgand methylprednisolone. One patient died, there was no improvementin eight patients and rest showed improvement with varying degrees. Conclusions: We did not observe major change of recovery betweendifferent treatment options, however, most of the patients usingmethylprednisolone required IVIg because of inadequate response.

Özet

Amaç: Üçüncü basamak hastaneye başvuran popülasyonda, GuillainBarré sendromu (GBS) ve varyantlarının, sıklık, klinik özellikleri, tıbbi tedavi seçenekleri ve son fonksiyonel durumlarını incelemeyi amaçladık. Yöntem: 1998–2013 yılları arasında akut enflamatuvar polinöropati tanısı alan tüm hastaların tıbbi kayıtları retrospektif olarak tarandı. Demografik, klinik ve laboratuvar bilgileri, tedavi seçenekleri ve düzelme oranları toplandı. Sonuçlar: Toplam 183 hasta çalışma kriterlerini karşıladı. Alttipler, tipik demiyelinizan form (n=102, %79,1), akut motor duysal aksonal formu (n=11, %8,5), akut motor aksonal formu (n=10, %7,8), Miller-Fisher sendromu (n=5, %3,9), saf duysal tip (n=1, %0,8) şeklindeydi.
