Abstract

Objective: To assess changes in conjunctival flora in patients with diverse malignancies which received or not received chemotherapy com-pared to healthy individuals. Material and Method: Conjunctival samples were taken from patients included to the study, which then were inoculated to various growth media. In which bacterial growth occurred, colony morphology, hemolysis and oxidase, catalase and coagulase tests were assessed for identification. Also, gram staining was performed to the colonial growth. Vitek 2 automated system was used for identification of growing bacteria (Biomerieux, France). Colony morphology, tube germ and slide culture in corn meal agar were performed to assess fungi growing in Saboraud dextrose agar. Results: Most frequent detected microorganisms in patients receiving chemotherapy or not, and healthy individuals were coagulase-negative staphylococci (36.7%, 56.7%, and 50% respectively) and Staphylococcus aureus (10%, 3.3%, and 6.7% respectively). In all three groups, no significant difference was detected among these microorganisms. In the chemotherapy receiving patient group, there was Candida glabrata, Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Kocuria kristinae growth in one patient each and Enterococcus faecalis growth in 2 patients. In the patient group not receiving chemotherapy, Microccoccus luteus, Kocuria kristane and Leuconostoc mesenteroides were detected in one patient ea ch. None of these microorganisms were detected in the control group. Conclusion: Conjuntival flora didn’t exhibit significant difference in main bacteriological profile among patients receiving chemotherapy or not, and healthy individuals. We found that microorganisms growing in conjuctival cultures of patients with malignancy had s ignificant diversity.
