Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effects of regulation of blood glucose level on dry eye parameters in patients with diabetes mellitus. Material and Method: Eighty eyes of 40 patients with diabetes mellitus were evaluated in two different groups according to glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) values in this randomized prospective study. Group 1 consisted of 20 patients with HbA1c higher than 6.5% and group 2 consisted of 20 patients with HbA1c lower than 6.5%. The tear film was evaluated with Schirmer test, tear break up time (TBUT), tear film osmolarity and corneal sensitivity values. Statistical analysis was performed by Student’s t test. Results: Mean Schirmer test value was 11.92±6.09 mm in group 1 and 12.45±7.61 mm in group 2. Mean TBUT was 7.02±3.19 s in group 1 and 7.15±3.71 s in group 2. There was no statistically significant difference in Schirmer test and TBUT values between group 1 and 2. Mean tear film osmolarity value in Group 1 was higher than Group 2 (293.1±11.67, 289.38 ±6.77 mOs respectively) but the difference was not statistically significant. Mean central corneal sensitivity was 53±4.7mm, mean inferior corneal sensitivity was 52.1±5.4 mm in group 1 and 56±4.7 mm,56±4.2 mm respectively in group 2. Corneal sensitivity was reduced significantly both central and inferior corneal area in Group 1 compared to Group 2 (p=0.003, p=0.001 respectively). Conclusıon: Diabetes mellitus and ocular surface problems appear to have a common association. In this study there was no correlation among HbA1c and Schirmer test, TBUT and tear film osmolarity but the increased HbA1c values caused decreasing in corneal sensivity.

Grup 1; HbA1c değerleri %6,5’in üzerinde olan 20 hastayı içerirken, Grup 2; HbA1c değeri %6,5’in altında olan 20 hastadan oluşmaktaydı.
