Abstract

Occult hepatitis B virus infection (OHB) is defined as presence of Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) deoxyribonucleic acid in blood or tissues with undetectable hepatitis B surface antigen, outwith the preseroconversion window period. Several possibilities have been hypothesized as the mechanisms of OHB. The clinical significance of OHB remains vastly unknown. OHB was initially de- tected in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma or unclassified chronic liver disease. OHB harbours potential risk of HBV transmission and may affect disease progression and treatment response of chronic hepatitis C.
