Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, risk factors and psychosocial impact of urinary incontinence in women aged 50 and over in Derya Health District.STUDY DESING: In this cross sectional study, the study population was 1,081 women aged 50 and over in Derya Health District. The minimum sample size calculated was 260 (assuming urinary incontinence prevalence of 25 % and ± 5 % deviation, within 95 % confidence interval, using Epi-Info programme) and 270 women were aimed for inclusion. Using cluster sampling method 224 women were interviewed (with a 82.9 % response rate). In this study urinary incontinence was considered as the dependent variable and sociodemographic variables, reproductive health, having any abdominal surgery and medical interventions were considered as independent variables. Chi-Square Test and Logistic Regression Analysis was used for data analysis.RESULTS: Among the women 39.3 % had urinary incontinence. Mixed type incontinence was reported by the 44.3 % of the women and 'mild' incontinence was most commonly reported (47.7 %). Psychosocial impact was reported by 54.5 % of the women. Only 40.9 % of the women who had incontinence consulted to a physician for this condition. In logistic regression analysis not being married and duration of menopause were independent risk factors for incontinence.CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of urinary incontinence in women aged 50 and over in Derya Health District was high. The risk factors associated with urinary incontinence were not being married and duration of menopause.
