Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate characteristics of users, effects of subdermal contraceptive implant and discontinuation rates. A prospective observational study of the etonogestrel subdermal contraceptive implant use in 148 women was carried out in IzmirAtaturk Training and Research Hospital between January 2002 and December 2005. Assessments included age, body mass index, weight gain, duration of use, bleeding pattern, systemic side effects, parity, menometrorrhagia (15.5 %). The implant was removed from 30% of all users and the most frequent reason for removal was the side-effects mentioned above (82%).The results of this study showed us that the side effects were more frequent in women below 35 years old and early discontinuation of subdermal contraceptive implant use were mainly due to bleeding problems.
