Abstract

The prognostic significance of laboratuary findings in carbon monoxide intoxication. Carbon monoxide, which is colorless and odorless in nature, may cause serious intoxication, even fatalities without the patient being aware. One hundred thirty five cases of carbonmonoxide intoxication (80 female, 55 male, mean age 32-14 years) admitted to the Emergency Unit of Internal Medicine were investigated retrospectively. Intoxication occured in 95 cases (70.8%) by stove, in 26 cases (19.4%) by gas heater in shower-bath. Complications developed such as hypoxic encephalopathy in 9 cases, Parkinson disease in 1 case, brain edema in 4 cases, rhab-domyolysis in 2 cases. Cases with complications had significantly higher leucocyte counts, creatinine kinase and creatinine-MB levels and significantly lower serum sodium, chlorine levels, arterial pH, arterial oxygen saturation and bicarbonate levels. Serum sodium level and pH were found the most important predictors of complication by multivariate analysis. There was no correlation between blood CoHb levels and complications.
