Abstract

Aim: We tried to discuss these two cases under the light of literature and to emphasize the importance of considering retropharyngeal abscess as a cause of respiratory difficulty especially in children under 5 years of age. Subject: Retropharyngeal abscess is an uncommon condition of acute deep space neck infection, usually located between posterior pharyngeal wall and prevertebral fascia and may cause respiratory tract obstruction with the potential for significant morbidity and mortality if not detected early. We presented eight and eighteen months old two infants with retropharyngeal abscess who admitted with respiratory difficulty but have been misdiagnosed at first admission centers. Result: Retropharyngeal abscess is an uncommon condition may cause respiratory tract obstruction in infancy, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment has vitally importance.
