Abstract

Tetanus is still a health problem in developing countries. The purpose of this study was to determine the tetanus immunity in the elderly living in the Province of Aydın. For the study group; 242 patients, over 50-years of age and who had no immunocompromising disease were selected. Place of birth, education, occupation, living place and vaccination history of all cases were recorded. The tetanus antibody levels were determined by ELISA and results over 0.1 IU/ml were considered as protective. The tetanus antibody levels were protective in only 20.2% of the cases. No statistically significant relation between the antibody levels with vaccination history and demographic characteristics of the cases was found. Thus, in the elderly the antibody levels are low and independent from sociocultural status. In conclusion, active tetanus immunisation of adults is important for providing a full protection against tetanus in the elderly.
