Abstract

The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the microorganisms isolated in blood cultures and their resistance to antibiotics in the Microbiology Laboratory of Celal Bayar University Hospital, between January 2005 and June 2006. During the study period 4140 blood cultures were evaluated by the BACTEC 9120 automatized culture system and 781 bacteria were identified. The most frequently isolated bacteria was Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (CNS) (22.3%), followed by Acinetobacter spp. (14.2%), Enterococcus spp. (1.1.8%), Escherichia coli (8.7%), Klebsiella spp. (8.3%), Candida spp. (%8.3), Serattia marcescens (7.6%), Pseudomonas spp. (6.9%), Staphylococcus aureus (%5.4) and Enterobacter spp. (1.4%). Oxacillin resistance in CNS and S. aureus isolates were 71.3% and 13.2%, respectively. No resistance for vancomycin and teicoplanin was found in enterococci. The resistance rates of Acinetobacter spp. to all tested antibiotics were high while Pseudomonas spp. (%48) isolates showed highest resistance to carbapenems, ceftazidime and aztreonam. Production rates of extended spectrum beta lactamases in Klebsiella spp. and £. coli strains were found as 55.4% and 20.6%, respectively. In conclusion, the results of this study could be useful in the empirical therapy of bloodstream infections in our hospital.
