Abstract

Introduction: Different strategies are used to help solve the nursing shortage worldwide. The employment of foreign nurses has been taken into consideration in recent years in Turkey, which is the lowest ranked OECD country based on the number of nurses per 1000 people. The employment of foreign nurses has now become acceptable in health facilities in Turkey in the Decree-Law 663/2011 on the Establishment and Duties of the Ministry of Health and its Affi liated Institutions.Aim: This study was conducted in order to learn the viewpoints of both nursing students and instructors regarding the employment of foreign nurses in a nursing faculty. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on senior nursing students and instructors in a nursing faculty. Data were collected by a survey in February-March 2012. Data received from the 150 surveys (students:118, instructor:32) were analyzed using percentage and frequency distribution and chi-square. Results: In this study, 83.1% of the senior nursing students (n:98) and 93.8% of the lecturers declared that they didn t support the employment of foreign nurses, and there was no any signifi cant difference between the two groups. It was determined that 78% of participants thought that foreign nurses would work for lower salaries. Conclusion: It was found that senior students and lecturers do not support the employment of foreign nurses in Turkey. It is recommended to conduct new studies by using more valid and reliable tools on the same topic.
