Abstract

We investigated 40 infants with diaper dermatitis for factors affecting the occurrence of diaper dermatitis which is the most common dermatosis of infants and microbiological culture results. Probable risk factors like age, gender, general health status, previous atopic disease, diapering habits and systemic antibiotic usage were assessed and mycologic and bacteriologic culture investigations from diapery region and feces were performed. Diaper dermatitis was most commonly (29%) seen in the first 3 months, against 15-18th months which seen least with 3%. In general health assessment, we found diarrhea in 40% of the subjects. 25% of the subjects had atopic dermatitis. Candida albicans reproduction was prominently seen in the feces of the patients who used antibiotic. Also, there were found oral moniliasis in 7 of 11 subjects in which C. albicans reproduction was seen in micological culture samples collected from skin. There was no reproduction of C. albicans in first three days from onset of lesions, while reproduction rate was found 50% between 4th and 6th days. Staphylococcus aureus was most commonly (%42.5) reproduced in bacteriologic cultures collected from skin.
