Abstract

Purpose: To report the clinical outcomes of 30 eyes of 29 patients who implanted scleral fixated intraocular lens (SF IOL). Methods: From July 2003 to December 2006, 30 consecutive eyes which underwent implantation of a secondary SF IOL were analyzed with a resrospective study. All of the cases were evaluated according to preoperative and postoperative visual acuity and complications. Results: 28 patients’ (19 male, 10 female) of 30 eyes had a mean follow-up at 20.3±9.2 months (6- 35 months). The mean preoperative best corrected visual aquity (BCVA) was 0.36±0.24 and the mean postoperative final BCVA was 0.41±0.28. In 73.4% of cases, the postoperative final BCVA remained at preoperative levels, in 16.6% of cases BCVA improved and in 10% of cases BCVA decreased compared to preoperative levels. The observed complications were transient corneal edema in 30%, increased intraocular pressure in 3.3%, transient coagulum in anterior chamber in 6.7%, hyphemia in 3.3%, fibrin reaction in 3.3%, prolapsus of vitreous to anterior chamber in 6.7%, cystoid macular edema in10% and retinal detachment in 3.3%. Conclusions: In the absence of capsular support, SF IOL implantation is an effective and safe procedure.
