Abstract

Ceftriaxone is a widely used third generationcephalosporin during childhood. Biliary pseudolithiasis (transient galbladder stone) has beenreported in patients who received ceftriaxone therapy. In our study we evaluated 8 patients (2boys and 6 girls with mean age of 4.5 years) withgallstones in Ultrasound examination during administration of ceftriaxone for treatment of pyelonephritis and meningitis. All of them were treated with ceftriaxone 50?100mg/kg/day divided into 2 equal intravenous doses. Pseudolithiasiscompletely resolved in 25-38 days after discontinuation of seftriakson therapy. Only three patienthad vomiting and abdominal pain, other patientswere asymptomatic. Development of pseudolithiasis after ceftriaxone administration is not uncommon and should be keep in mind by pediatrician and radiologists in order to avoid unnecessary surgery or consultations.
