Abstract

Normal hearing in early infancy is essentialfor speech, language, and social andemotional development of human beings.Congenital hearing loss has an impact onnormal speech and language, on cognitiveand behavioural development in babies.Newborn hearing screenings has beenproposed for the early diagnosis andtreatment of infants with hearing loss, andthereby improve language outcomes inthese babies. Our aim was to evaluate therelationships between risk factors for hearingimpairment and otoacoustic emission (OAE)and auditory brainstem responses (ABR)results in patients followed at NeonatalClinic of Umraniye Training and ResearchHospital.. Results:Seventeen out of 100 neonates inthe group with risk factors failed OAE tests,of which 5 were also failed ABR test. Treeout of 100 neonates in the group withoutrisk factors failed OAE tests, of which 1wasalso failed ABR test. When the test failscompared with the number of risk factors;1% of neonates without risk factors, 3.2% ofneonates with 1 risk factor, 25% in the groupwith two risk factors, 100% of neonates with3 risk factors did not pass the screening. As a conclusion, the increase in the numberof risk factors significantly increases thefailure rate of the ABR test.
