Abstract

Asthma is a chronic inflammatorydisease of respiratory tract. many differentinvasive and noninvasive tests are performedto diagnose asthma. Yet no definite criteriafor diagnosing asthma are determined. In our study we aimed to showthe relation between blood parameters andpulmonary function tests (PFT) with theasthma severity in patients with a diagnosisof asthma, and post-treatment changes inthese parameters. Children aged 0-14 yearswith asthma seen in our outpatient policlinicwere prospectively evaluated. Completeblood count, ECP, specific IgE,Total IgElevels of the patients are recorded at thebeginning of the study. Children > 6 yearsperformed spirometry. All patients filled astudy registration form that includes majorand minor risk factors. We classified theseverity of the disease according to GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma) and we followedthe treatment protocol. The severity ofthe disease did not show any significantcorrelations with the gender, atopic historyand family history. A statistically significantdifference was found between the ECP,Total IgE levels and severity of asthma. Weobserved a decrease in the asthma severityduring 2nd visit. Our results showed thatserum ECP levels are significantly correlatedwith the severity of asthma and may beuseful in the assessment of asthma control.Hence the PFT is quite difficult to performin children, noninvasive parameters arebecoming more important for the follow upof the treatment.
