Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is an important pediatric public health problem associated with risk of complications in childhood and increased morbidity and mortality throughout adult life. Obesity and insulin resistance are also key features of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) and the prevalence of MS among obese children and adolescents appears to be rising rapidly. There are numbers of childhood MS criteria’s defined by various organizations and authors, but consequently there is no consensus in regards to MS diagnosis. Our aim was to determine the incidence of MS among obese children and adolescents using different MS criteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Obese children aged between 6-18 years applied to our Pediatric Clinic from August 2013 to April 2014 included in this study. The IDF and modified WHO criteria, and those defined by Ford, de Ferranti, Cruz and Weiss are used for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: A total number of 355 obese and overweight children evaluated in the study. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in the sample was determined to be 26, 5% by IDF criteria, and 21, 8% by modified WHO criteria DISCUSSION: MS is quite common among obese children and associated with increased cardiovascular risk. Sensitivity and Specificity of childhood metabolic syndrome criteria we used in our sample were quite high. When we take our results into consideration, we recommend obese children to be screened for MS and cardiovascular risks in early childhood. Also there is a need of comparison more criteria to determine high sensitive and specific criteria’s in the pediatric population.
