Abstract

Objective: The main goal of periodontal therapy is the regeneration of periodontal tissue. Therefore, various forms of materials have been used. Calcium sulphate (plaster of Paris) has been investigated in previous studies and accepted as a cheap, easily manipulated and well tolerated material by soft and hard tissue. Although, recent reports have demonstrated clinical success in this material, histological results were unavailable. The aim of the present study is to compare the effect of calcium sulphate in conjunction with gamma irradiated human bone graft dehydrated with solvents and the bone graft alone on the periodontal regeneration of experimentally created Class II furcation defects of dogs. Material and Method: For this purpose, class II furcation defects were surgically created in mandibular teeth of 6 dogs. The defects were assigned in different groups; gamma irradiated human bone grafts dehydrated with solvents, gamma irradiated human bone grafts dehydrated with solvents in conjunction with calcium sulphate and the control group. Six weeks and twelve weeks after application, periodontal regeneration was analyzed by histomorphological investigation. Results: In all sites where bone graft material was applied, new attachment and new bone formation was observed histomorphometrically, in amounts greater then in the calcium sulphate in conjunction with bone graft material. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that calcium sulphate decreased the periodontal regeneration capacity of bone graft material.
