Abstract

Aim: Carotid artery calcifications identified on panoramic radiographs are advisable markers for subsequent vascular events. The objective of the study was to identify the carotid calcifications on panoramic radiographs of the volunteer dental outpatients with no systemic diseases. Materials and methods: Panoramic radiographs of 1160 dental outpatients were examined for any unusual radio-opacity adjacent to or just below the inter-vertebral space between C3 and C4. The sample included 528 men, with a mean age of 48,6 and 632 women, with a mean age of 47,9. Results: The radiographs showed that 2,50 percent of the patients had carotid calcification, all of whose ages were ≥40. When the carotid calcification rates of male (3,22%) and female (1,90%) were compared, the rates were not significant (P=0,151). Conclusion: These patients with such calcification should be referred for further evaluation of carotid arteries, coronary arteries and vascular risk factors.
